appearance.
Dean is someone who looks like he's in shape—muscular arms, broad jaw, stiff way of carrying himself like he's obviously in shape. He stands at the height of six-foot-one and weighs a fair amount for his height, just about right, except probably a bit heavier because he's actually so covered in muscle. His appearance, bare, is largely untarnished, with the exception of his left arm and a tattoo stopping possession on his chest, where there's a large hand print left by an angel. This is because he's actually, literally, as cheesy as it sounds: he's been touched by an angel. The touch left a burn-like mark. The rest of his body is surprisingly without scars for his career, but this is because being brought out of where he was touched—Hell—left him without any identifying marks outside that hand. He was, in many ways, as "good as new."

Outside of this, the way Dean manages to carry himself is confident, upright, without any sign of him showing any problems. He smirks a lot, and despite slipping in and out of many roles, there's a way to how he carries himself that implies that he's a little rough around the edges. He keeps his dark blond hair cropped close to the head, the part closest to his forehead normally sticking out. His eyes are a greenish color, and the way he dresses, as long as he's not in a "role," is generally in jeans and T-shirts, the T-shirts often colored by a plaid shirt. He has a leather jacket that he seems rather fond of, too, or that he's had for a while.

He also wears a necklace all the time with a little charm on it. He's very possessive over this item, as it came from his brother.

personality.
Dean Winchester is a liar.

Of course, that's not the impression you get off him, sly smile, husky way of handling himself with a good sense of humor and an occasionally cocky charm. He's fond of good music, good looking ladies, and if you didn't know what he did for a living, you'd think he's just a bad boy with an occasional tendency toward stupidity and insensitivity, but someone you can have a lot of fun with. Gruff way of handling himself, with confidence and no problems, like he has a handle on everything. Sure, you might believe there's something underneath, but he just keeps everyone at a distance because that's what these types of guys do. It's not that he means to be occasionally cold, but you have to poke to see that there's more to it. And sure, he has a healthy smattering of misogyny, but he's not all bad. He's cool, he's easy, and while he's not always level-headed, are these types of guys ever level-headed?

Of course, that last part is probably the only bit that Dean doesn't lie about. Though he's always been a bit rough, it's always been a defensive way of handling himself. He's always had to be the stronger brother to protect the younger brother—he had to be the soldier, following orders, and the biggest order of all involved his younger brother: Sam. Protect Sam. Keep him alive. Remember to follow orders. This is the job, this is the mission, hunt because that's what's supposed to be done. His father was obsessed, and as a result, it was only natural that Dean himself would carry on the obsession. He hardened himself, allowed himself to become a rough around the edge hunter, so that his brother would be safe and so they could save people. He never intended to become anything but a hunter, accepting that it was his mission in life.

And this was all because Dean has a cripplingly low self-esteem. Self-worth is practically non-existent, his own careless actions making him careless when it comes to his own life (Sam—Sammy—will always go first). He has a second—or third—chance at life now, but that doesn't change how he sees himself. This self-esteem is now weighted down by the fact that he's guilty for what he did in Hell. Before, he didn't think much of himself, believing in what he needs to be done at any moment. It was strange acting confident when he didn't believe in that confidence at all. It was all fake, a charade in order to act as if he always had everything in order. However, now things have changed because of that guilt. Now, instead of merely shoving aside (or acting as if) his low self-esteem wasn't a problem, not he feels as if he needs to atone. He needs to make up for what he's done by torturing souls in Hell. The guilty he feels, the weight of giving in and eventually being the cause for the first seal breaking—it's hard for him to overcome. And Dean, for all that good, hardened exterior, bears the weight of everything in his life several times over.

He's now focused, but still sloppy. Dean is someone who seems to wear his weaknesses on his sleeve if someone knows how to look at them. He's obstinate and stubborn, but he wants to do good things for people. While sometimes he doesn't always know what that is, or what he intends to do, he wants to be there for others. He wants to atone, to fight, to be obsessed and do everything he possibly can for the sake of the good things to come. If he fails, he'll go down fighting. If he fails, at least he'll have failed fighting for a good cause, a good reason, even if he needs to atone and get over things. He's angsty, and he has to deal with his mistakes—the fact that there's seemingly a hole inside of him because of the fact that he was able to enjoy hurting others.

Things have, overall, changed. He might believe he has more of a reason to be alive than before, and he still has a fight to struggle through, but he'll bear it. Of course, there are also the issues with his brother, his weakness, who has pushed himself into a position where Dean can't trust him any longer. He's decided to take a different stance on everything, not to exactly fight for heaven or hell, but to fight for humanity—but his brother's changes, his problematic behavior, has set him down a new path in life. It will be difficult going, but Dean has dealt with everything—the weight and horrors of Hell, the loss of his mother, father, and even brother at some point—and he can deal with this. Even if it might tear them apart as they find themselves crossing the lines of war back and forth.

But it's hard to see this because he's a liar. Dean isn't going to show someone his tears and guilt. He'd rather insult Bon Jovi and favor his car, worry about his family, enjoy busty Asian beauties. He'll be the one who loves the hunts that involve strippers, because this is the guy he's supposed to be. He's dedicated to this life because it's who he is, and he hides the fact that underneath all this, he does enjoy a bit of normalcy, the idea of a beautiful wife and a kid, and a brother who's close. He's guilty and he doesn't think he deserves anything. But if you're hot? None of this matters. He'll throw you a genuine smirk and play along easily enough, gruff tone and good jokes carrying him through. It's okay to be a liar. It's what keeps Dean together.

abilities.
Abilities: He's a normal human, but he's surprisingly skilled in a number of different areas. Fraud, weaponry, tactics, and hunting. He knows how to deal with a large number of supernatural creatures, and is a capable fighter against them—despite his human skills, strength, and so forth. He's also a skilled mechanic, knows a bit of necessary chemistry, and how to configure electronics. From his father, he knows a bit of military knowledge, how to read coordinates of longitude and latitude and things like that.

As a hunter, he has to take on numerous roles for jobs, and while he's not the best at it, he shows the ability to figure out how to get into things and carry on various disguises. He's also, as mentioned, good at credit card fraud, and carrying on different ways of impersonating officers of the law (or otherwise).

He's also good at torturing people. Hell helped him there.

history.
The story of Dean Winchester (and his brother Sam) doesn't exactly start on January 24, 1979, when he was born, but in 1973, when his mother, Mary, a hunter, was forced to make a deal with a demon called Azazel so she could bring her future fiancé and husband, John Winchester back to life. She wanted nothing more than to be able to live a normal life with her future husband, but this changed everything. Six years later, after the two got married, Dean was born and named after his grandmother, Deanna, and four years later, Sam was born. Things would have been normal—Mary, for all terms and purposes, was released from that life by the death of her father—and John was a normal guy, a normal mechanic. And then, on the night that Sam turned six months old, Azazel came to collect on that deal. His collection meant that he dropped demon blood inside Sam's mouth, and when Mary came to witness the event, she was killed. Their house was caught on fire, and Dean was forced to carry his little brother out.

This moment set in stone Sam's position as his greatest weakness, and the fact that Dean would always, always, feel responsible for him.

After all this, John Winchester learned about what happened, and learned about the darker side of the world. He became obsessed, bent on revenge and becoming the jaded soldier that someone might expect to have spent time in a war. Prior to this, he was in love, willing to see the best in a situation, and he even believed in happily ever after. His immediate changes left him scarring both of his kids in various ways—turning Dean into a soldier, a warrior, and turning Sam into someone who would inevitably resent him a little for the rest of their lives. They lived a hard life, Dean being forced to be a mother and a father for his little brother, hardening himself and taking care of him while they moved from hotel room to hotel room, school to school, and experiencing one miserable holiday after the next. Their life was obsessed, hard, and darkened, and Dean forced himself to become stronger because of it. He needed to protect Sam. Sure, he picked up a tendency for women and enjoying some rather hedonistic aspects in life, but he never lost sight of what was most important: protecting Sam, even if at times, Sam could protect himself.

When it came to Sam deciding to go his own way, Dean was forced to take his dad's side on it. He and Sam stopped speaking for a while as Sam went off to Stanford, and Dean became a solo hunter in his own right—and other times, he still worked with his dad. Dean had moments of fleeting happiness—a girl named Cassie, who couldn't seem to handle his choice of career and called him a freak because of it—but he carried on, acting as if he could deal with this life to the best of his ability.

The separation between the brothers seemed to exist for a while until John went missing, leaving Dean in a position where he needed help to go find him. He showed up at Stanford to ask for Sam's help, and then the two went off to the hunt. The hunt itself, while difficult enough, went off without too much of a hitch, and then Dean allowed Sam to go back to Stanford, even if they hadn't found their father. Upon returning, Sam found his fiancée (or future fiancée) dead on his ceiling and the place burned up. The two of them took to the road then, carrying through many adventures.

As time passed, the two grew closer as they faced many trials. Ghosts, a wendigo, more ghosts, even a boy who had special abilities just like Sam turned out to have—but they could deal with this, they could deal with all of it, as it was only expected. Demons eventually became their main enemy. Though they weren't knowledgeable about demons when they set out, they became rather intimate with them. Demons were what killed their mom, and the demons had a plan, a major plan. The plan itself involved a colt and Sam (as well as other children), but Dean was very much an observer and forced to watch all of this. They eventually met up with their father again, who was then possessed, and then they forced the demon inside out and while trying to get away from the scene, a terrible accident occurred. John was injured, Sam was mostly okay, but Dean was sent into a coma and was forced to face death itself: a reaper by the name of Tessa. Though he was prepared to accept his death in the end, his father made a deal with Azazel to save Dean, giving up his own soul and the colt (which, for the record, is a special gun with special bullets that can kill any demon) in order to save his son.

Things get tricky from there. John's dying wish was for Dean to protect Sam—as always—from what he was going to become, and if he couldn't, he would have to kill him. Needless to say, given his attachment to his brother, Dean wasn't too comfortable with this.

This started a slippery-slope for Dean that was already set. He became obsessed with the idea of killing monsters, but not killing his brother. Monsters were monsters, but Sam, Sam, was always Sam. He grappled with this for some time until he was forced to tell Sam, and after Sam became possessed by a demon from their previous reckless adventures, Dean was forced to realize he probably couldn't bring himself to kill Sam. Sam was too important to him—so important that later on, when given a shot at seeing a "perfect" life with a perfect woman and his mother still alive, he couldn't handle the fact that his brother had nothing in common with him, no common string, even if it was hunting. In the end, Sam was meant to become a special kid, but in the final trials to have him come out on top, Sam was killed, Dean was devastated, and he went to a crossroads demon (a demon meant to make deals) and sold his soul so Sam could get back to living again. Dean couldn't live without him, even if after this, he only had one year to live. Following this event, the gate to Hell was momentarily opened and a flood of demons got out. However, after being asked if Sam being brought back was a good idea by Azazel, Dean managed to shoot the demon and kill him.

Five days later, the results of letting those demons out started to show. Sam and Dean (and Bobby, a family friend who had helped them several times before but started becoming more heavily involved in their lives) were on the hunt again. They ran into the literal personifications of the seven sins, and in this battle, Sam was saved by an unknown demon named Ruby, and Dean managed to fight pretty well on his own. At the end of it all, it was a sign of bad changes to come. Sam and Dean continued hunting, with the occasional help from Bobby, and along the way, they ran into a troublesome thief named Bela, and continued to deal with her. They (meaning: Sam, but Dean would learn eventually) learned of the fact that there was a powerful demon rising with the intention of causing problems named Lilith, who was powerful and wanted to see Sam dead. Eventually, they lost the regained colt due to Bela's sticky fingers, and just barely escaped an attack by Lilith with the help of Ruby and some hex bags (witchcraft items that could keep them hidden). All while this was happening, Dean was reckless, careless, and going back and forth on whether he was truly afraid of dying. They were seeking a way to stop it, but they couldn't.

In the end, as these things go, Dean died. Typically, this would be the end to things, it wasn't.

For the next forty years of his "life," Dean was in Hell. He was tortured for thirty years by a demon named Alastair until he gave in to the temptation to torture other souls in Hell. He did this—and even enjoyed it—for the next ten years, not knowing that doing this was eventually what broke the first seal to set off the breaking of the next sixty-five seals. It would be his fault if the Apocalypse would happen (as it seemed to be on the way to happening). Castiel (and the other angels) eventually broke into Hell to pull Dean out, but it was too late. This was done because Dean was meant to be a soldier for God, though the actual definition of this was a bit murky.

The seals kept breaking, with the responsibility for it eventually being in Dean's hands from time to time. He struggled with the fact that he would have to stop this, and he took on missions here and there to help. Eventually, he and Sam met up with a fallen angel by the name of Anna, who had disobeyed and had some curious parallels to Dean because of their issues with their father (only her father, of course, was God). They wanted to feel, to exist, to not feel guilty for wanting this, and the two eventually consummated their interest in one another not long before they found out where Anna's grace happened to be (prior to this, they were hiding, and Dean was given a choice between her and his brother, and his choice would always be Sam). There was a so-called show-down between Heaven and Hell, which led to nothing major accept Anna having her abilities again.

There would be more hunts, with Dean becoming obsessed to hunt because he needed to atone, and Sam growing increasingly frustrated with him. The two eventually gained a call from Bobby—actually, it was Castiel, the angel—to go to a place in Wyoming to keep another seal from breaking. Over thirty were already broken, but they still had to try. They were eventually successful in stopping the seal from breaking (the task involved killing two reapers, and Dean met up with the reaper, Tessa, again, and said not going with her made him feel a little empty inside, like there was a hole inside of him). After that, the angels had captured Alastair and Dean was brought in to torture him to get information about who was killing. It turned out that it was one of the angel's own, Uriel, who wanted to cause Lucifer to rise again. Dean was supposed to die in this, but he managed to live.

All while this was going on, Dean was progressively realizing that his brother was lying to him, even if Dean was starting to be more honest about his experiences in Hell and everything he had gone through. Dean didn't know that Sam started taking Ruby's blood in order to grow stronger, and watched as Sam became colder than ever and more aggressive. A lack of demon blood left him going crazy and feeding off a possessed woman, and Dean and Bobby locked Sam up to make him detox on the blood. Sam eventually got out with the aid of Castiel, who had been called in for help by Dean, and Dean eventually hunted down Sam and they led to an eventual estrangement.

Dean is forced to find out that the angels were going to let the final seal be broken after all, and were preparing for it. Castiel, to some degree, goes rogue while they try to find out where the final seal would be broken, and Dean ends up arriving a little too late. The final seal—Lilith, it turns out—was already killed by Sam. When Dean comes in, he stabs Ruby for manipulating Sam all along up to this point, and a portal opens with a great deal of bright light. Lucifer had risen, and the Apocalypse was finally on its way.
